It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since my wife and I launched the Rock Dojo! At the time, we had naught but a bicycle and a dream: to change the world one guitar lesson at a time.
Although we traded in the bicycle for ‘The Dojo Mobile’ a couple of years back, the dream remains the same today.
The Year In Review
2017 was our busiest year to date. We made a mini-documentary film, won and administered a Regional Arts and Cultural Council Project Grant, and published two guitar method book for kids: Guitar for Kids: Rock Dojo The Complete Belt System and Guitar for Beginners: Rock Dojo: Yellow Belt Edition!
And of course, we taught some awesome group guitar lessons at ACCESS Academy, Beverly Cleary, Laurelhurst School, & Irvington School!
Thanks to Our Students
While we’re certainly proud of all the great things we accomplished, we are most proud of our student’s achievements including their dedication to practice their guitars, their ability to perform under pressure in front of audiences, and their courage to create original music!
Student Composition of the Year
It sounds just like Cars 3!”
Every Wednesday, my students at ACCESS Academy demanded to hear Can’t Think at the beginning of each group guitar lesson. It’s an original student composition using a traditional ABABCB pop formula featuring two guitars, bass, drums, and piano.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Brian Parham is the founder of the Rock Dojo in Portland, Oregon, where he teaches hundreds of kids between the ages of 6 and 12 years-old to play, perform, and compose their own original music on the guitar in after-school group guitar lessons.
